Interview By Melissa Princeton

Q: So, Ce-ILLA?, where were you born and raised?

A: I was born and raised in the city of North Long Beach, CA.

Q: Ah, representing the West Coast! What style or types of music do you listen to?

A: I have a pretty eclectic taste in music, but my main focus is on hip hop. I like that old-school boom bap sound, as well as G-funk and funk. I also have a soft spot for jazz.

Q: Nice, sounds like you have a lot of influences in your music. Who are some of your biggest influences?

A: Definitely J Dilla, RZA, and Dr. Dre are three of my biggest inspirations in terms of production. As a rapper, I really look up to artists like Nas Chino XL and Ras Kass for their ability to tell stories through their lyrics. DJing has also always been a big influence, as I started out as a DJ before getting into rapping and producing.

Q: That's a solid lineup of influences, for sure. But who really inspired you to make music in the first place?

A: Growing up in Long Beach, I was exposed to a lot of different types of music, but it was really the local scene that inspired me to get into making music. I was always amazed by the talent of the rappers and producers in my community, and I wanted to be a part of that. It wasn't until later on that I really started to find my own voice and develop my own style of music.

What's for Lunch

Cardi B recently took to social media to share an inside look at her daughter Kulture's school lunch selection, and fans are having some wild reactions. The rapper and social media sensation gave her followers a glimpse into the extravagant and diverse menu options available to her daughter at school, sparking both awe and controversy among netizens.

In a series of Instagram stories, Cardi B showcased the impressive array of food choices that Kulture has access to during her school days. The selection included a wide variety of cuisines, ranging from traditional American dishes to international delights. Fans were quick to notice the extravagant spread, which seemed far from the standard school lunch fare that many are accustomed to.

One particular item that caught people's attention was the sushi option on the menu. Sushi, a Japanese delicacy typically associated with high-end restaurants, raised eyebrows and generated some envy among viewers. It was a stark departure from the typical pizza, chicken nuggets, and PB&J sandwiches that are often associated with school lunches.

Social media users had a field day expressing their reactions to the lavish school lunch spread. Some applauded Cardi B for providing her daughter with such a diverse and high-quality selection of food, arguing that it reflects her commitment to providing the best for her child. They praised the rapper for ensuring that Kulture has access to a well-balanced and culturally diverse menu, which they believe promotes healthy eating habits and broadens her culinary horizons.

However, not everyone was impressed by the extravagant school lunch selection. Critics argued that the display was excessive and unrealistic compared to the average school lunch experience. They claimed that it perpetuates an unrealistic standard and raises questions about the equity of access to quality food among students. In a society where many schools struggle to provide nutritious meals to all students, the display of such opulence sparked concerns about the glaring disparities in the education system.

The discussion around Cardi B's daughter's school lunch also opened up a broader conversation about the state of school lunches in general. Many people expressed frustration with the limited options and poor nutritional quality often found in school cafeterias. This incident served as a reminder of the ongoing need to address issues of food inequality and to advocate for improved standards in school meal programs nationwide.

While the reactions to Cardi B's showcasing of her daughter's school lunch were varied, it undeniably sparked a conversation about the disparities in access to quality food within the education system. It shed light on the need for greater efforts to ensure that all students, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status, have access to nutritious and culturally diverse meals at school.

Ultimately, this incident serves as a reminder that food equity is a critical issue that warrants attention and action. It highlights the importance of ongoing advocacy and efforts to improve school lunch programs, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to nourish their bodies and minds with quality meals.

 By Ceon Figs

The Great Divide: Examining the Differences Between Mainstream and Underground Hip Hop

Hip hop has come a long way since its birth in the Bronx in the 1970s. The genre has become a cultural force and has given rise to mainstream and underground subcultures. Mainstream hip hop has gained widespread appeal and commercial success, with artists striving to produce chart-topping hits. On the other hand, underground hip hop emphasizes authenticity, experimentation, and maintaining the art form's roots. In this article, we'll explore the differences between mainstream and underground hip hop, their impact on society and culture, and the importance of balancing commercial success and artistic integrity.

1. Introduction to Hip Hop and its Evolution

The Roots of Hip Hop

Hip hop originated in the African American and Puerto Rican communities of the Bronx in the 1970s. It began as a culture of expression and resistance, with elements including rap, DJing, breakdancing, and graffiti.

The Emergence of Mainstream and Underground Hip Hop

As hip hop gained popularity, it split into two distinct categories: mainstream and underground. Mainstream hip hop refers to commercially successful artists who are widely recognized and represented by major record labels. Underground hip hop, on the other hand, is characterized by its independent nature and focus on artistic authenticity.

2. Understanding Mainstream Hip Hop and its Characteristics

Commercial Success and Mainstream Appeal

Mainstream hip hop artists prioritize commercial success and mass appeal, with the goal of topping charts and dominating the music industry. They often use a formulaic approach to songwriting and production, with catchy hooks and beats.

The Role of Record Labels in Mainstream Hip Hop

Mainstream hip hop artists often sign with major record labels, who provide resources such as marketing and promotion, distribution, and financial stability. In exchange, the labels have a say in the artist’s creative decisions and often aim to produce music that will sell well.

The Evolution of Mainstream Hip Hop Sound and Style

Over time, mainstream hip hop has evolved to include a wider range of sounds and styles. From the boom bap sound of the 80s to the trap style of today, mainstream hip hop continues to adapt to changing trends and pop culture.

3. Defining Underground Hip Hop and its Subculture

The Origins of Underground Hip Hop

Underground hip hop emerged as a response to the commercialization of the music industry. It prioritizes artistic integrity and authenticity, with artists often refusing to compromise their vision for commercial success.

The Countercultural Nature of Underground Hip Hop

Underground hip hop is often characterized by its countercultural nature, with artists challenging mainstream values and norms. It often tackles themes of social injustice, inequality, and political activism.

The Importance of Authenticity in Underground Hip Hop

Authenticity is highly valued in underground hip hop, with artists often eschewing major record labels and opting to remain independent. They prioritize creating music that is true to their personal experiences and artistic vision.

4. Mainstream vs Underground Hip Hop: A Comparison

Differences in Style and Sound

Mainstream hip hop tends to prioritize commercial success and mass appeal, often using formulaic songwriting and production techniques. Underground hip hop, in contrast, prioritizes artistic authenticity and often features more experimental sounds and styles.

Commercial Success vs Artistic Integrity

Mainstream hip hop artists often prioritize commercial success and may sacrifice artistic integrity to achieve it. Underground hip hop artists, on the other hand, prioritize artistic integrity and may sacrifice commercial success to maintain it.

The Role of Mainstream and Underground Hip Hop in Society

Mainstream hip hop often reflects and reinforces dominant cultural values, while underground hip hop challenges them. Both have the potential to shape and influence society, with mainstream hip hop often reaching a wider audience and underground hip hop often driving countercultural movements.5. The Impact of Mainstream Hip Hop on Culture and Society

Mainstream hip hop has had a significant impact on culture and society. On one hand, it has brought hip hop to a wider audience, made it more accessible and popularized it. This has led to more diverse and mainstream acknowledgement of hip hop as an art form. On the other hand, it has also brought with it a number of negative issues such as sexism and misogyny, glorification of violence and unhealthy materialism.

The commercialization of hip hop has also had a profound impact on hip hop culture. It has led to the commodification of the art form, with record labels and entertainment companies seeking to maximize profits by producing and promoting music that is often repetitive and formulaic.

The influence of hip hop on youth and pop culture cannot be ignored either. With hip hop icons becoming mainstream celebrities, many young people look up to these figures and emulate their lifestyles.

6. The Importance of Underground Hip Hop in Preserving the Art Form

Underground hip hop has always played a vital role in preserving the core values and identity of hip hop. Its focus on authenticity, creativity and experimentation often pushes the boundaries of the genre and keeps it fresh and interesting. Underground hip hop artists also tend to be more socially and politically conscious, addressing issues and experiences that are often overlooked in the mainstream.

Independent labels and artists play a crucial role in underground hip hop. They provide a platform for artists to showcase their talent, without having to adhere to the commercial constraints of the mainstream. These independent artists are often able to express themselves more freely and artistically, without the pressure of having to create music that aligns with popular tastes and trends.

7. The Future of Hip Hop: Balancing Mainstream and Underground Elements

The future of hip hop lies in finding a balance between mainstream and underground elements. While the mainstream provides a platform for artists to reach a wider audience, it is important to recognize and promote the unique perspectives and styles of underground artists.

Technology has also played a significant role in the evolution of hip hop. It has made it easier for artists to create and promote music independently, without the need for major record labels. This has led to an increase in the diversity of hip hop styles and sounds.

Balancing commercial success and artistic integrity is key to the future of hip hop. Success should not come at the expense of compromising the artistic value of the genre.

8. Conclusion: Celebrating the Diversity and Creativity of Hip Hop

Hip hop has left an indelible mark on culture and society. It has evolved and transformed into a global phenomenon, with diverse styles and sounds from all over the world.

It is important to recognize and celebrate the different styles and perspectives that hip hop embodies, whether it is the mainstream or the underground. Hip hop has always been a reflection of society and culture, addressing issues and experiences that often go unheard.

As we move forward, it is important to preserve the authentic roots of hip hop while also embracing its evolution and diversity. In conclusion, mainstream and underground hip hop have their own unique characteristics that make them appealing to different audiences. Both subcultures have contributed significantly to the evolution of hip hop and have left an indelible mark on society and culture. While it's important to recognize the differences between the two, it's equally important to celebrate the diversity and creativity of hip hop. Ultimately, the future of hip hop depends on finding a balance between commercial success and artistic integrity, and preserving the authenticity and experimentation upon which the genre was built.
